After the past few weeks of a sober feeling going around the house the family’s trying to have a cheery evening in the drawing room. Jo offered to help by playing a few songs on her guitar for everyone to listen. She’s become very talented over all of the years of practicing and can really play a mean tune on her guitar.

Being head of the local newspaper in town, Ben hears about every piece of news before it gets published. His assumption about the European war spreading over to them seems to become more and more of a possibility as every day goes by. Since it’s up to him what news ends up being published, he tries to keep the news of war breaking quiet enough not to raise any alarm but also doesn’t want to catch anyone off guard if war does break out, so he tries to keep it on the low for now.

Scott and Flora have a lot of decisions to make for planning their wedding. Today, Scott asked Flora out for a discussion that she assumed was more planning for the big day. Flora wanted to sort everything out as soon as possible so that she could get an idea of where and when the wedding might take place. The only problem was that she found whenever she started talking about wedding plans Scott would switch the conversation over to the current climate of the country being on the verge of war. Flora was getting a bit frustrated with every conversation that she started going from wedding planning to the war and she couldn’t understand why Scott kept persisting on changing the topic. When he asked her to sit dawn she could tell that he invited her out for different reasons that she had assumed.

Scott told her that people around town – and the whole country for that matter – were coming to terms with the fact that war was on the horizon and that they could be weeks, if not days, away from it. Scott hesitated a bit as if he couldn’t get the right words for what he wanted to say. Flora asked what that had to do with the two of them since he wasn’t in the army. Scott looked at her seeming determined to be precise with what he was about to say and told her that he intended to enlist himself into the army when war broke out. Flora couldn’t respond back to him straight away. She thought that he had to be joking. He had just proposed to her roughly two months ago and now he was going to enlist into the army? She tried to get an explanation as to why he himself would possibly want to get sent out when the country already had an army but all she got back as a response was that he felt that it was his duty as an able-bodied young man to fight for his country. She tried a few more times to talk him out of it but he wouldn’t move on his decision.
