After the past few weeks of a sober feeling going around the house the family’s trying to have a cheery evening in the drawing room. Jo offered to help by playing a few songs on her guitar for everyone to listen. She’s become very talented over all of the years of practicing and can really play a mean tune on her guitar.

Being head of the local newspaper in town, Ben hears about every piece of news before it gets published. His assumption about the European war spreading over to them seems to become more and more of a possibility as every day goes by. Since it’s up to him what news ends up being published, he tries to keep the news of war breaking quiet enough not to raise any alarm but also doesn’t want to catch anyone off guard if war does break out, so he tries to keep it on the low for now.

Everyone back at home couldn’t do anything but just sit around and wait. Flora tried to talk a little to ease the tension, but nobody really had anything to say to one another. After what had happened with Essie everyone was anxious with the idea of childbirth.

Luckily, everything went according to plan. They got a call from Ben about an hour or two later saying that Amanda had given birth to a boy. Amanda wanted to name him Kenneth and Ben had no issue with that name so they were able to settle that matter very quickly. As per usual, the hospital wanted to keep Amanda and Kenneth there for a few days after he was born. Amanda told Ben that he needn’t wait around the hospital, so he went back home. He was waiting for them in the hall on the day that they were discharged. He was so happy to see Amanda come home with their new baby in her arms.

But he did have some bad news waiting for them when they got back. He told Amanda that just a few hours ago the country had officially joined the war. He assured her that she had nothing to worry about in terms of the household. It’s been predicted that now Germany’s gained another enemy force that the war won’t go on for very much longer. If that’s the case then the draft won’t have a need to be enacted. He assured her that even if the draft was enacted that his high up position at the newspaper would keep him home from fighting, so he didn’t want her to worry. Amanda wasn’t very worried – not at first. The news troubled her a little bit but the feeling was easy to brush off considering that the change it brought didn’t compare to the change of having a newborn in her life.

The same could honestly be said for Ben. He was glad that his son was safe and at home. He hoped that it was true what they said about this war being the one to end all wars so that in the future his son would never have to experience what they all were right now.
